A dog-walking quote is useful only when you know what the clock covers. Ask whether 30 minutes means time outside, time from key-in to key-out, or a pickup window that includes driving. In a Vancouver apartment, elevators, harnessing and drying paws can take a noticeable part of a short booking.
Start with two current price points
Checked September 20, 2026, downtown Vancouver provider Embarkadero lists a 30-minute private walk at $32 and a 60-minute private walk at $48, with GST extra. Fairy Dog Mama displays $45 and $60 for those durations on a page titled “Rates & Services (2025).” These are individual providers’ posted prices, not a city average or endorsement. Check the live page and ask for a quote to your address.
Turn one visit into the month you need
At $32, five weekday walks cost $160 a week, or $640 across four weeks before GST. At $45, three walks cost $135 a week, or $540 across four weeks. These examples use published 30-minute prices simply to show the effect of frequency. They do not account for holidays, extra dogs, key pickup or a different service area.
Send every walker the same request: address, days, arrival window, required outdoor time, number of dogs and any route or handling limits. Ask about recurring discounts only after the normal service fits. A package is not a saving if visits expire or the walker cannot reliably cover the dog’s needed break.
Find the price-changing decisions
Ask whether the quote changes for weekends, short notice, an extra household dog, medication, travel beyond a core area or a walk that runs long. Define a failed-entry visit: if the fob does not work and you cannot answer, how long does the walker wait and what is charged?
Weather needs a price rule too. If a 60-minute walk becomes 20 minutes outside plus indoor play because sidewalks are icy, does the full price apply? That may be reasonable when the caregiver still spends the booked time with the dog, but the replacement should be agreed rather than invented at the door.
Compare value after a trial
Record arrival, key-in and key-out, approximate outdoor time, route, update and final charge. GPS distance alone is a weak measure: sniffing, slow mobility and safe street crossings can make a shorter route more appropriate. The useful question is whether the walker delivered the care and time you bought and handled changes as promised.
Compare the cost of the day, not only the walk
The walker’s location can change value even when it does not create a separate travel fee. A provider already serving your block may offer a tighter arrival window. Someone crossing the city may need a wider window that misses the dog’s usual noon break. Ask how often the proposed window is met and what notice you receive when traffic pushes it later.
Consider two quotes for an apartment dog. Walker A charges $35 for 30 minutes from key-in to key-out. The elevator and harness usually use eight minutes, leaving about 22 minutes outdoors. Walker B charges $44 for 30 outdoor minutes and schedules ten more minutes for entry and return. If the dog needs the outdoor time, those services are not nine dollars apart in any useful sense. If the dog mainly needs a toilet break and company, Walker A may still fit. Ask the provider to describe the clock before deciding which price buys more.
Ask what the invoice will call an exception
Use concrete questions: “If you arrive and my dog will not leave the unit, do you stay for the booked time?” “If I forget to leave the harness, is the visit cancelled or changed to indoor care?” “If the elevator is unavailable, does extra stair or waiting time reduce the walk?”
A strong reply separates events and explains charges. A vague promise to be flexible can hide an early finish or an unplanned add-on. The same applies to late owner cancellation and provider cancellation: find out whether the visit is charged, credited or moved.
Tips are a personal choice and should not be used to make an incomplete quote look affordable. Compare the stated service price, tax and predictable fees first. The most useful budget is one you can maintain through an ordinary four-week month without depending on a promotion.
