Pet-sitting cost depends on the hours present, where care happens and which tasks fit inside the price. Compare a complete absence rather than a daily headline.
Use one current provider as a reference point
Checked September 20, 2026, Vancouver provider Fairy Dog Mama displays live-in care in the client’s home at $140 per day and boarding in the provider’s home at $110 per day on a page titled “Rates & Services (2025).” The provider states that dogs in live-in care may still be alone for four to six hours.

Compare what $140 and $110 cover
Live-in care keeps the pet at home, but you need the sitter’s arrival, departure and longest absence. Boarding uses the sitter’s home, so ask about transport, resident animals, sleeping arrangements and time left alone. The $30 displayed difference is not simply a convenience premium; the services place the pet and responsibility in different locations.
For an illustrative three billed days, the displayed rates total $420 for live-in care and $330 for boarding before tax or additions. If the owner must make two long boarding trips, add that time. If live-in care needs paid parking or another visit for a second pet, add the quoted fee. Use only costs that actually apply.
Ask how a billed day works
Does a day run midnight to midnight, for 24 hours from drop-off, or between set check-in and checkout times? A Friday evening to Monday morning trip may be billed as three days, four calendar dates or another pattern. Ask before comparing totals.
Request prices for extra pets, veterinarian-directed medication, holidays, key pickup, extended presence and late return. For visits, multiply the number needed to cover the whole absence. Two daily visits for three days are six bookings, not one daily price.
Understand extra-pet pricing
An added pet does not always double the work, but it can lengthen feeding, litter care, medication and walks. Ask whether the fee is per pet, per task or per additional time block. Give the whole routine before accepting a flat add-on.
For example, two cats sharing food and litter may fit one visit, while two dogs needing separate walks may not. If the provider quotes the same small extra-pet fee for both situations, ask how the required time is protected. A complete quote should fund the work rather than assume the sitter rushes.
Price travel changes before travel
Ask what happens if you return two days early. Is unused care refunded, credited or still payable? If a flight cancellation adds a night, can the same sitter continue and at what rate? If not, who has authority to arrange backup care?
Also separate owner cancellation from provider cancellation and failed home access. The charge should depend on what happened, not simply be called a cancellation.
Keep the quote attached to the service
If tipping is part of your personal practice, keep it outside the service comparison. First determine whether the quoted rate fully pays for the required hours and tasks. A service that depends on an unspoken tip to cover routine work has not given you a complete price.
Save the assigned person, dates, hours, longest absence, tasks, access, rate and possible extras. After the first booking, compare the invoice with that record. Good value means the care actually covers the pet’s day, the provider communicates changes and the arrangement remains affordable enough to use when you need it.
